Our Mission
MacDonnell Security Risk Management is a company dedicated to being a valuable partner at the port operations security level of supply chain management by providing risk management, training and integrated maritime security services.
Company Summary
MacDonnell Security Risk Management was created in 2003 to address an emerging need in the maritime security field. The company’s creation occurred during a time of increased vigilance and regulation relating to security and international shipping. The company has succeeded in becoming a highly active services provider participating in this specialized field of maritime security and has been highly focused on this market sector.
As a result of 9/11, the IMO moved quickly to announce the International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) Code. This new international protocol stipulates that all port facilities around the world which receive SOLAS Class vessels, and the SOLAS vessels themselves, needed to become compliant to these regulations by July 1, 2004.
Canada, as a signatory country to the ISPS Code, followed suit with the Marine Transport Security Regulations to operationalize the ISPS Code in Canada. Other signatory countries enacted similar legislation.
The regulations specify explicitly the requirements for port facilities, and ships, to prepare, implement and monitor detailed security plans in order to become compliant with both the domestic and international regulations. Any port facility deemed non-compliant could result in ships coming from them being refused entry at subsequent ports. For this reason, the motivation to remain compliant is imperative for international facilities.
With these new regulations came the need for new security services and training. Transport Canada requires all Canadian training providers be recognized, a form of certification. In 2005, MacDonnell Security Risk Management became one of the training providers recognized by Transport Canada. MacDonnell was recognized specifically for courses on training Marine Facility Security Officers, Company Security Officers and Vessel Security Officers. Since then, MacDonnell has developed a full suite of training courses that cover awareness up to the executive management level. Now, MacDonnell’s list of course offerings is the most comprehensive of any other recognized trainers in Canada.
